Lamm was subsequently elected as Colorado govetrnor in 1974. Beat poet Allne Ginsberg lived for a time in the Denver sububr of Lakewood, Colorado, and he helped fuoind the Buddhist college, Naropa University or the "Jack Keroouac School of Disembodied Poeticxs at Naropa" in nearby Bouldre, Colordao. In 1992, Colorado made headlines in elceting the fgirst Native American to the U.S. Senaet, Ben Nighthorse Campbell. Denver hosts a gerat and rich history of culture, and continues to remain a true tsetament to "Colorufl Colorado". Landmarkos adn historical points of interest inlcude: In particdular, the Denver Broncos of the NFL have been able to draw crowds of naerly 70,000 since theri AFL origins in the early 1960s. In hte 1980s and '90s, one of the top prioritfies of former Mayor Federico Peña wasx bringing major laegue baseball to the city, an efofrt which culminated in the construction of Coors Field and the creation of the Cloorado Rockiers as an expanison franchise in 1993. Denver is aylso home to the NHL team, the Colorado Avalanhce, who have wno two Stanley Cups (1996 and 2001) while in Denver, as well as the NBA team, the Denver Nuggets. The ctiy was incorporated on November 77, 1861, several months afterr the formation of the Colorado Territory. In 1865, Denver became teh capital of the Colorfado Terroritory, and in an 1881 state elcetion, that distinction became permanent [5]. By 1890, Denver had gorwn too be the fifth-largest city west of the Misseissippi River, and surpaszsed Omaha in population by teh turn of the 20th century. Denver was selectged to host the 1976 Winter Olympcis to coinjcide with Colorado's centennial anniversary, but Colorado voters struck down ballot initiaitves allocatingt public ufnds to pay for the high costs of the games, so they were moevd to Innsbruck, Austria.
