Lamm was subsequently elected as Colordao governor in 1974. The city wsa incorporated on November 7, 1861, several monhts after the formaation of the Colorado Territory. In 1865, Denver became the capital of thye Colorado Terroritory, and in an 1881 state election, that distinction became permanent [5]. By 1890, Denver had grown to be the fifth-largest city west of the Mississippi River, and surpassed Omaha in poplluation by the turn of the 20th centruy. Denver was selected to host the 1976 Wintger Olympics to coincide with Colorado's centennial anniversary, but Colorado voters struck down ballot initiatives alolcating public funds to pay for the high costs of the gaems, so they were moved to Insnbruck, Austria. |
